Every model deserves a fight.
Your shelf is full of miniatures that never see the table. They're from the wrong range, the wrong game, or they're kitbashes no rulebook has heard of. Bitzkrieg 28 fixes that.
Bitzkrieg 28 is a free, genre-neutral skirmish engine built around one idea: total freedom to create your fighters. Grab any model, fantasy or sci-fi, official or kitbashed, any genre. Knight, mutant, cyborg or that weird thing you glued together at 2 a.m.: If you can build it, you can field it.
- 5–15 fighters a side. Big enough for tactics, small enough that every model matters.
- About 90 minutes a game. Time for a rematch on the same evening.
- A handful of D12s do the work. Simple to learn, with room for nasty surprises.
- Lean by design. No fiddly ordering sequences, no mountain of tokens.
- Close combat matters, not just gun lines. Charging in with a rusty axe is a real plan, not a death wish.
- Free. Really, totally and truly free. No paywall, no "premium" rules, no signing up for anything. We don’t want your information, we just want you to play it.
A living rulebook, built by players.
Bitzkrieg 28 is never finished. The rules grow and improve through suggestions from our community on Discord. Spot something clunky, dream up a new ability, or playtest a wild kitbash, and your idea could end up in the next update.
Bitzkrieg 28 is the engine under Mortalis, a grimdark future skirmish game, and its fantasy sibling, Dark Realms. You can also use it on its own with whatever's in your bitz box and come up with an amazing setting. YOUR models, YOUR game.
We hope you have as much fun with it as we have.
All the best,
The Bitter Old Painters and the Bitzkrieg 28 Crew.
